Scholarships and Subsidies
The Minnesota Historical Society has a deep commitment to education. To increase access for students and teachers, we offer numerous scholarships and subsidies to help offset the costs of field trips, bus transportation, education programs, and teacher workshops.
If you have applied for scholarships in the past, the process has changed for the 2025-26 school year. We have moved to a universal application. You will fill out a single application to qualify for all of our available scholarship funds. Our team will assess your application and connect you with the best available funds to assist with offsetting field trip costs.

Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Discounts
New this year, your FFRL discount will be automatically applied at the time of your reservation. Our schedulers will confirm your FFRL percentage for the year through the Minnesota Department of Education and include your discount in your confirmation materials. If your school does not have an available FFRL percentage on file, you may be asked to provide additional documentation.
Eligibility
- Any students in grades K-12.
- 50-74% Federal Free and Reduced Lunch qualify for a 50% discount on admission/program costs to our sites. Schools with 75%-100% Federal Free and Reduced Lunch qualify for a 75% discount on admission/program costs to our sites.
- Field trips must take place to an MNHS historic site or museum
- The Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Discount may be used in combination with other MNHS transportation/busing subsidies on the same field trip date.
Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Discounts are an in kind gift on behalf of the Minnesota Historical Society in its effort to make sure all students and teachers have equity of access.

Dahlberg Scholarship
Dahlberg Scholarship offers financial assistance to offset admission costs for grades 4th through 8th grade.
Eligibility
- Students in grades 4th through 8th grade.
- 50% or more of the school's students must be enrolled in the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program (FFRL).
- Field trip to an MNHS historic site or museum must take place between September 2, 2025 and June 12, 2026.
- Funds are limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Eligible schools will receive coverage for the full cost of your admissions/field trip programming for all students and adults.
- The Dahlberg Scholarship may be used in combination with other MNHS transportation/busing subsidies on the same field trip date.

Legacy Field Trip Support Fund
Legacy Field Trip Support Fund offers financial assistance to offset transportation costs. Available to schools statewide.
Eligibility
- School must be in Minnesota.
- 25% or more of the school's students must be enrolled in the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program.
- Field trip to an MNHS historic site or museum must take place between September 2, 2025 and June 12, 2026.
- Funds are limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Eligible schools will be reimbursed at the rate of $8 per student that attended the field trip.
- Legacy award funds will not be applied to MNHS invoice for field trip admission or programming costs. This is a transportation/busing reimbursement fund.
- Legacy Field Trip Support Funds may not be used in combination with other MNHS transportation/busing subsidies on the same field trip date.

MacMillan Field Trip Grant
MacMillan Field Trip Grants Program helps offset transportation and lodging costs to schools in Greater Minnesota.
Eligibility
- School must be in Minnesota.
- Schools located 0-50 miles from their chosen MNHS historic site are eligible for an $8 per student transportation subsidy.
- Schools located 50+ miles from their chosen MNHS historic site are eligible for a $12 per student transportation subsidy.
- Field trip to an MNHS historic site or museum must take place between September 2, 2025 and June 12, 2026.
- Funds are limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Schools do not need to meet any Title I, Federal Free and Reduced Lunch or other economic need requirements.
- MacMillan Field Trip Grant may not be used in combination with other MNHS transportation/busing subsidies on the same field trip date.
Field trip access scholarship made available thanks to the generous support of the Elizabeth and Whitney MacMillan Field Trip Education Fund.

Adelia Wilson Endowment
Adelia Wilson Endowment covers all transportation and admissions costs to schools visiting the Alexander Ramsey House.
Eligibility
- Students need to be in grades K-12 and scheduled to visit the Alexander Ramsey House.
- Schools do not need to meet any Title I, Federal Free and Reduced Lunch, or other economic need requirements.
- Field trip to the Alexander Ramsey House must take place between September 2, 2025 and June 12, 2026.
- Funds are limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Eligible schools will receive free admission for all students to the Alexander Ramsey House.
- Eligible schools will be reimbursed for the full cost of bussing after the bus invoice is submitted to scholarships@mnhs.org.
- The Adelia Wilson Endowment may not be used in combination with other MNHS transportation/busing subsidies on the same field trip date.

McKnight Foundation Scholarship
McKnight Foundation Scholarship offers financial assistance to offset transportation costs and provides free admission to Mill City Museum for metro-area public schools.
Eligibility
- Must be a public school in the Twin Cities Seven County Metro area (Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, and Washington counties).
- 50% or more of the school’s students must be enrolled in the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program (FFRL).
- Visit to Mill City Museum must take place between October 1st, 2025 and March 31st, 2026.
- Funds are limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Eligible schools will receive free admission for all students and adults to Mill City Museum.
- Eligible schools will be reimbursed for busing at the rate of up to $10 per student that attended the field trip.
- McKnight Foundation Scholarship may not be used in combination with other MNHS transportation/busing subsidies on the same field trip date.

How to apply
Fill out the application to qualify for all of our available scholarship funds. Our team will assess your application and connect you with the best available funds to assist with offsetting field trip costs.
Please gather the following information to apply:
- School name
- School address
- Primary contact name, email, and phone number
- Select which MNHS location you are visiting (one per visit date)
- Visit date
- Estimated student attendance
- Grade level(s)
- Booking confirmation number
- Federal Free and Reduce Lunch Rate (FFRL)
What to expect
- You submit your application.
- Our office will match your school to the appropriate fund(s) to meet your needs.
- We might ask for additional documentation, such as a W-9 form for your school/district or an updated FFRL percentage for the school year.
- Processing time may take up to seven business days from the submission of your application, particularly during peak booking months.
- You will receive an award letter detailing which fund(s) you have been awarded for your visit.
- If your school has received a scholarship that comes in the form of a reimbursement, you can expect to receive your funds within 40 days after the field trip is completed. Funds will not be sent in advance, as reimbursement is based on your attendance. There is no further documentation or invoicing required for a reimbursement.
- If you have received a scholarship that covers the full cost of your transportation, you will be instructed to submit a busing invoice after the field trip is completed. This will be communicated in your award letter.
- Once you have received your award letter, get ready to enjoy your field trip!
