Schedule Your Field Trip
So you want to take a field trip to a Minnesota Historical site or museum?
Here is what you need to know to set up your visit!
Request a field trip
Step one: Select your location.
The Minnesota Historical Society offers a variety of sites to choose from, each of which offer something unique and impactful for visiting students. You can review the programs at each site at mnhs.org/fieldtrips.
As you explore your options, consider…
Availability
- When are field trips offered at this location (dates, times)?
Program Offerings
- How long is the program?
- What grade levels is the field trip best suited for?
- Are there optional lessons, crafts, or activities I can add to my field trip?
Billing Details
- MNHS field trips are invoiced after your visit.
- Learn more about available Scholarships & Subsidies to offset the cost of your field trip.
Proximity to Other Field Trip Locations
- Are there other field trip locations nearby we could pair?
Step two: Gather your information.
Who is going on the field trip?
Once you know which location(s) you would like to visit, confirm who will be attending your field trip. You will be asked to provide the following information:
- School contact information including:
- Address
- Primary contact (Lead teacher)
- Secondary contact (Another teacher coming on the trip!)
- Invoice contact (Who should receive the bill?)
- Planned Visit Numbers
- Number of Students (Organized by grade level)
- Number of Staff
- Number of Chaperone (Parent volunteers)
- Accessibility needs or accommodation requests
While most field trip programs have set start times, please also be prepared with your preferred arrival and departure times. These will help MNHS staff schedule your visit.

Step three: Request your field trip!
You’ve picked your location and confirmed who is attending the field trip. It's time to fill out a request form! Field trips to partner sites must be reserved directly with the site.
Tips for filling out the request form:
- Want to visit multiple sites? You can submit one request form.
- The earlier you book the better!
- If less than six weeks from the trip, staff at MNHS sites and locations must approve the request.
- If less than two weeks from the trip, staff must approve the request AND no changes can be made to attendance numbers.
- Use the notes field.
- Communicate special requests or accommodations needed.
- Provide your preferred schedule.
- Share any questions or concerns.
Please note, admission costs are for anyone age 4 and over. Memberships and 6th grade passes are not valid on field trip days.
After you submit the request form, you will receive a response from our field trip office or a confirmation document via email within three business days of submitting your form. Please reach out to fieldtrips@mnhs.org if you do not hear from us within that time.
Review MNHS cancellation and rescheduling policies on our Policies Page.

Step four: Prepare for your day!
Keep your confirmation!
You will receive a confirmation via email when your trip is officially reserved. The confirmation includes your expected groups, schedule, and pricing. Please save this document and share it with other teachers attending the field trip.
