A Dakota man who helped found the Hazelwood Republic and the first Dakota man to receive U.S. citizenship. He opposed the 1862 U.S.-Dakota War 0f 1862, bringing many people to safety during the fighting, and continued to aid Henry Sibley's troops after the war.
