LAKE BRONSON, Minn (June 26, 2025) – Whether archaeology is your passion or a childhood dream, you can take part in a unique experience. While the water levels at Lake Bronson are low during the ongoing construction to replace the dam in Lake Bronson State Park, the Minnesota Historical Society, the Department of Natural Resources, and the Kittson County Historical Society are looking for volunteers to assist professional archaeologists to survey the lake basin for archaeological sites.
Archaeologists are interested in identifying and researching any archaeological sites exposed within the lake basin, including sites dating thousands of years to remnants of the Works Progress Administration (WPA-era) camp to build the Lake Bronson dam in 1936. Volunteers will get an up-close opportunity to join a pedestrian (walkover) survey with archaeologists by hiking through areas that are typically underwater. No previous experience is necessary – just the ability to walk through the basin on uneven terrain for two hours at a time.
Volunteer shifts will be scheduled throughout July and August, and volunteers will be asked to commit to 8 hours (or more!) throughout the summer. Training will be provided prior to the archaeological surveys. Individuals, as well as educational and community groups are welcome to sign up through the Minnesota Historical Society at mnhs.info/lakebronson. All ages are welcome to join.
