Field Note

instructor with students working on brick project in workshop

Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps members joined Itasca State Park staff to restore a stone drinking fountain built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The project was led by John Beaty, a technical instructor and Minnesota Historical Society employee. As part of Northern Bedrock’s mission to provide young adults with training in historic preservation, the hands-on work gave Corps Members practical experience in caring for cultural resources while supporting the park.

Heritage Preservation Grants

Spotlighted Project: Accessible Restrooms - Tower Historic Fire Hall
Brick wall and barred window with toliet stalls and baby changing stationThe Tower-Soudan Historical Society used a $10,000 small grant to complete accessible restroom construction in the Tower Historic Fire Hall. Two former jail cells were converted into women’s and men’s restrooms. Work included demolition of the old women’s restroom floor, framing of an exterior wall, and installation of drywall on plumbed walls. Taping was finished, and painting, fixtures, and stall separators followed. The project built upon earlier efforts from the 1990s and 2019, which had roughed-in plumbing and framed space for restrooms but never completed the work. By using existing infrastructure in the addition, the project avoided changes to the historic fire hall’s original structure while achieving ADA compliance.

The completion of the restrooms advanced the fire hall restoration plan and ensured that the building could serve its public role as a History Education Center. With accessible facilities, the historic site could host school programs, history talks, fundraisers, and community events, supporting Tower’s Main Street revitalization. The project reinforced the building’s value as a landmark that connected residents and visitors with the past of Tower, Soudan, and Lake Vermilion. Grant support from the Minnesota Historical Society provided leverage for additional community and foundation funding, moving the ongoing rehabilitation efforts forward and returning the 1895 structure to active public use.
Recipient: Tower-Soudan Historical Society
Funded Amount: $10,000

From the Blog

This week's blog post is from Kraus-Anderson. Have a blog? Let us know!

Exterior of St. George’s Episcopal Church

Quonset Huts
Astute visitors and residents of St. Louis Park might notice something noteworthy on Minnetonka Blvd and Highway 100. One of the buildings belonging to St. George’s Episcopal has a familiar shape and an interesting history.

In 1947 parishioners of St. George’s Episcopal church accepted a proposal by architect E.R. Ludwig. The new (formed in 1945) congregation was getting its own church building. Dripping with stone and reminiscent of English country life, this initial plan couldn’t be further from the St. George’s we see today.

Ludwig’s initial proposal brought with it an estimated cost of $150,000. Newspapers were taking note of the congregation’s fundraising efforts, but they were noteworthy more for the inspired variety of campaigns than for the amounts raised. In 1948 the congregation of St. George accepted a radically different proposal for its new church that would, amazingly, only cost $55,000 to build. The eye-popping difference in price stems from a value that Kraus-Anderson was offering to clients at this time: prefabrication. By way of Steel Structures Inc., KA was a major supplier of Quonset huts for a post-WWII US that was desperate for built space. Continue Reading »
