Field Note

Four people standing between archival shelves and filing cabinets at the Minnesota Transportation Museum

Minnesota Historical Society's Local History Services team met with members of the Northern Pacific Railway Historical Association at the Minnesota Transportation Museum's Jackson Street Roundhouse in St. Paul, MN, to discuss a planned project to digitize the Northern Pacific Railway's AFE files (Authorization for Expenditure). Each AFE includes details such as a description of the work, estimated and actual costs, approval signatures, and relevant correspondence, producing a thorough accounting trail. These records provide detailed, primary-source documentation of the railroad’s development, investments, and infrastructure changes, crucial for understanding regional economic growth, immigration patterns, and technological progress in the northern United States.

Heritage Preservation Grants

Notice to Solicit Nominees to Historic Resources Advisory Committee
The Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS) is actively seeking candidates to fill several open appointments on the Historic Resources Advisory Committee (HRAC). Committee members are responsible for making funding recommendations for grant requests exceeding $20,000 and providing policy and grantmaking guidance for the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants program, which is supported by the Legacy Amendment’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

To ensure a diverse pool of candidates, the recruitment period for the Historic Resources Advisory Committee has been extended, allowing potential committee members more time to learn about the opportunity and submit their letters of interest and resumes. The new deadline for applications for the term beginning in January 2026 is Friday, October 24, 2025. If you have any questions, please reach out to Carolyn. From the Blog

This week's blog post is from the Ramsey County Historical Society. Have a blog? Let us know!

Growing Up Working at a Saint Paul Jewish Delicatessen
So, what exactly is a Jewish Delicatessen?
The word “delicatessen” itself means delicacy in German, but the image it evokes, when coupled with the descriptor, Jewish, is something more visceral: the smell of freshly baked bread, mounds of corned beef and pastrami piled high on caraway rye, half dills, full sours, pickled beets, and the list goes on.

Before we go too much further, let’s have a look at a bit of history: Jewish immigration to the United States began with a trickle back in the eighteenth century when Sephardic Jews (those who originated in the Iberian Peninsula, with some stopping for short or longer periods in South America or on various Caribbean islands following their hasty departure due to the Spanish Inquisition) made their way to the New World. This small group didn’t venture as far north as the Minnesota and Dakota Territories, but they were the earliest Jewish immigrants to the Americas. Their numbers never represented even one percent of the American population. Continue reading »
