Invasive Species Removal Volunteers (One Day Opportunity)

Start Date: Saturday, July 15th 10am - 2pm (One-Day Opportunity)

Jeffers Petroglyphs is an internationally significant Native American sacred site and the location of the largest group of Indigenous petroglyphs (rock carvings) in the Midwestern United States. Situated in Dakota homeland, it is sacred to multiple Native American nations, including the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Iowa, and Ojibwe.

Lend a hand - help us remove exotic plant species encroaching on this special place. 

Service Summary:

Invasive Plant Species Removal Volunteers work with Jeffers Petroglyphs staff and coordinators to remove Queen Anne’s lace and wild parsnip from designated areas to preserve the natural status of the site. 

Please bring a refillable water bottle. We will provide snacks, tools, water, gloves, lunch, and sunscreen.

Time Commitment: 

This is a one-day service opportunity.

Invasive Species Removal Volunteers Should Be:

• Volunteers must be at least 18 years old on the day of service

• Able and willing to work in outdoor weather conditions

• Willing to participate in physically demanding service

• Willing to follow directions of site staff

• Must arrive wearing long pants, long sleeves, and close toed shoes

• Please leave pets at home unless they are a service animal

Training:

If selected, a fifteen minute in-person training session will be provided on the day of service which will include:

• Basic knowledge of the site (hours, facilities, emergency and evacuation procedures, etc.)

• Service-specific training and orientation

• Covid safety procedures

Invasive Species Removal Volunteers at Jeffers Petroglyphs will explore Minnesota history, prehistory, and one of the most important archaeological sites in the state. 

This opportunity will help present and future generations experience the sights, smells, and sounds of these special places. You might even be able to bring something you learned back to your garden at home! Free parking is available for volunteers during their time of service.
