The Keepers of the Sacred Tradition of Pipemakers is organized and granted permission to purchase the Rock Island Railroad Depot.
1996
Art Zimmiga, a Lakota from Pine Ridge, South Dakota, has a day vision of a huge peace pipe to be built and placed outside the Keepers of the Sacred Tradition of Pipemakers headquarters.
1996
Lisa Dietz, a Midi Anishinaabe woman from Sault Saint Marie, Michigan, has a vision of a giant peace pipe to be built by the Keepers of the Sacred Tradition of Pipemakers.
1997
Bill Johnston has a vision of the big peace pipe and enlists his father, Bud Johnston, to help build it. Bud's youngest son, John, is asked to be the welder on the project.
1998
Construction of the peace pipe is completed in Spokane, Washington.
1999
The world's largest peace pipe is put on permanent display near the Pipestone National Monument.
May 2008
The giant peace pipe is featured in Reader's Digest magazine.
