William Rush Merriam is born in Wadhams Mills, New York, on July 26.
1861
He moves to St. Paul with his family.
1871
He graduates from Racine College in Racine, Wisconsin, as valedictorian.
1872
Merriam marries Laura Hancock.
1882
He is elected as a representative to the state legislature.
1884
He is president of the Merchants' National Bank in St. Paul.
1886
He is reelected to the state legislature and chosen speaker of the house.
1889
Merriam becomes the eleventh governor of Minnesota on January 9.
1899
President William McKinley appoints Merriam director of the twelfth national census.
1931
Merriam dies in Florida on February 18 at age eighty-two.
