At History Carts within exhibits, you will provide a hands-on experience for visitors and extend the content of the exhibit gallery through information you are presenting.

The volunteer in this position will rotate hourly between Gallery Greeter and History Cart.

Responsibiltiies

  • Attend daily meetings to hear about the plan for the day, collect your daily schedule, and pick up a radio. A typical day begins at 9:45am.
  • Greet/support the visitor experience, both field trip and general public.
  • Be kind and courteous to visitors as they explore the museum.
  • Support learning and engagement in each gallery space through our multimedia experiences, History Carts, and programs while rotating from gallery to gallery on the hour or half hour.
  • Support other members of the Interpretive team.
  • Help create and maintain safe learning environments.
  • Whenever possible, participate in staff meetings to learn more about exhibits, upcoming programs, and general training supportive of our work.

Museum Assistants wear blue MNHS polo shirts and volunteer name tags to help identify themselves as helpers while working in the galleries.

A majority of shifts are 4 hours with a 30 minute break. Punctuality is essential. Communication around schedules and changes is critical.

Volunteers

Volunteers are essential to the Minnesota Historical
Society.

You are part of Minnesota's story.

From the shores of Lake Superior to the depths of the State Archives, MNHS volunteers are everywhere.

Our opportunities are as diverse as the people and places we serve. Volunteers help us cultivate curiosity, care for collections, share their stories, and more! Don't have a history degree? That's ok. For many opportunities, prior formal education or experience is not required.

Want to see what's out there? Hop over to our Volunteer Opportunities page to see how you can help.
