Green Thumb

Dig into history! Become a Green Thumb Volunteer at the James J Hill House (JJH) and Alexander Ramsey House (ARH). Alongside staff, these volunteers will plant and maintain the gardens at both of these National Historic Landmarks. By helping to care for these Gilded Age gardens, you become a part of the story.

Responsibilities:

Green Thumb Volunteers provide consistent maintenance of the grounds, landscaping, flower pots, and flower beds. This opportunity includes seasonally appropriate gardening tasks such as: weeding, trimming, raking, soil amending, and pruning. Lawn care is not included in this opportunity.

Volunteers wear an MNHS volunteer shirt and nametag (provided) while on shift with neat casual clothes and close-toed shoes.

No previous experience or equipment is required.

We are looking for volunteers who are:

  • Friendly and courteous
  • Willing to follow staff directions for seasonally appropriate gardening tasks
  • Able to use hand tools like shovels, rakes, and garden hoes for light to medium physical activity (training provided)
  • Willing to get dirty, wet, hot, and encounter wildlife (like insects)
  • Are able to work independently AND enjoy serving with a team of volunteers and staff
  • Interested in historic landscapes, the Ramsey family, or the Hill family

Time commitment:

2-4 hour shift weekly or bi-weekly on Wednesdays for the entire growing season (March - November).

Volunteers

Volunteers are essential to the Minnesota Historical
Society.

You are part of Minnesota's story.

From the shores of Lake Superior to the depths of the State Archives, MNHS volunteers are everywhere.

Our opportunities are as diverse as the people and places we serve. Volunteers help us cultivate curiosity, care for collections, share their stories, and more! Don't have a history degree? That's ok. For many opportunities, prior formal education or experience is not required.

Want to see what's out there? Hop over to our Volunteer Opportunities page to see how you can help.
