Volunteer Fife Instructor for Fife & Drum Corps at Historic Fort Snelling

Service Summary: Be a part of a unique opportunity to teach the Fife and Drum Program youth interns and volunteers to play the fife and then experience playing with the Corps for public presentations and performances as you bring the connection of history and music to the public.  Multiple eras of music represent the broad history at Historic Fort Snelling.

Responsibilities: This opportunity is February through October and will include rehearsals and performances both on and off site.  Special performances may be scheduled November through January.

You would be working with individuals as well as the entire group to teach fifers and must be comfortable teaching fife technique to members who have music experience, but not necessarily with a flute.

Punctuality and good communication with the Program Associate who leads the Fifes and Drums is important.   Costuming will be provided.

Program is coordinated through the Program Associate, Music, at Historic Fort Snelling who reports to the Site Manager, Historic Fort Snelling.

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm and a positive approach to teach and motivate students.
  • Advanced proficiency performing on a flute and/or fife, or experience playing a flute and a willingness to learn how to play a six-hole fife.
  • Ability to teach fife technique to musicians with little or no fife experience.
  • Ability work as a team player.
  • Experience performing in a fife and drum corps and/or performing in a marching music ensemble is desired.
  • Music arranging skills would be helpful along with experience with using music notation software.

Time Commitment: February thru October 2024

Hours will vary for rehearsasls and performances.
