GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. (August 14, 2024) – Draft horses played a crucial role in Northern Minnesota’s logging camps of the 19th century, hauling logs through the woods and to river banks, where they were shipped around the world. Renowned for their beauty and strength, draft horses continue to work in a variety of ways throughout Minnesota, including at the Forest History Center. On August 23 and 24, the site invites visitors to meet and interact with these impressive animals.

During Real Horsepower Days, teams of draft horses and teamsters will hold demonstrations throughout the two-day event. Guests will be able to get an up-close look at these powerful and beautiful animals and learn about how teamsters work with them on a daily basis. Short trolley rides will also be offered.

For those who want more interactions with draft horses, 90-minute, horse-drawn trolley tours are offered at the Forest History Center every Wednesday through Saturday through August 31, and on Fridays and Saturdays from September 6 through October 19.
