Field Note

It was a very windy Duluth Superior Pride with the St. Louis County Historical Society. Staff spent time talking about the importance and the need to collect and preserve histories of the LGBTQ community in Greater Minnesota and rural Minnesota.

New Pages for Northwest Cargo
Freight was always a key revenue source for NWA, and during World War II the company gained invaluable experience with dedicated cargo operations. Military lift contracts and charter flights contributed steady revenue, and from the mid 1960s Northwest ran its own scheduled freighter network. We have launched two resource pages to help enthusiasts and researchers better study this important part of the company:

First is a collection of cargo schedules – grids from passenger timetables as well as standalone publications, starting with the first published grid from October 5, 1964, and going all the way to the end of 2008. As our general timetable scanning project continues, this page will also keep growing. Continue Reading »

Presentation: Embracing Our Roots: Rooted and Rising
September 7 @ 1 to 3 pm - Givens Collection of African American Literature and Life, the University of Minnesota School of Music - Join Dr. Yolanda Williams and PaviElle French, culture bearers of the Twin Cities Black music community, as they recall the path and people that have led to their becoming composers of songs for the people. Event: Jews in Public Office: From Territorial Days to Today
September 8 @ 7:30 pm - Minneapolis: The Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a special event. Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin, Minnesota Senator Sandra Pappas, and Secretary of State Steve Simon will be speaking about how Judaism has impacted their public service careers. The discussion will be led by Robin Washington, the editor at large for 'The Forward.' Jamie Raskin, a constitutional scholar and Congressman from Maryland, will also share insights as the grandson of Samuel Bellman, who was among the first Jewish state legislators in Minnesota. Event: Woodbury Vintage Base Ball Game
September 15 @ 1:30 pm - Woodbury Heritage Society - A Vintage base ball game is scheduled between the Saint Croix Base Ball Club and the Woodbury Mystery Team at Lake Middle School on Field 3. Ballpark. The game will follow the "1860 New York Rules" as set forth for the event. Seating is limited, so attendees are advised to bring their own chair. Presentation: How an Archaeologist Makes Sense of the Past: An Example Using Pope County
September 22 @ 1 pm Glenwood: Pope County Museum - Minnesota State University Moorhead Emeritus Professor, George R. Holley, Ph.D will present a presentation on Native American ceramics found in Pope County. In spite of the limited evidence available from the past, archaeologists are able to marshal these bits of information to construct a scaffold with links to the environment, developments in neighboring societies, and the ever-changing stylistic vogues. Holley will illustrate what goes on in the process of making sense of the past by using pre-contact native ceramics found in Pope County. Learn more »

November 15 - (Deadline): Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) - This is a special initiative of the Museums for America grant program. It supports projects that use the transformative power of professional development and training to generate systemic change within museums of all types and sizes. Hays Papers; the Minnesota Academy of Medicine Organizational Records; the Rose Ensemble Organizational Records; the Veterans Affairs Department, Hastings Veterans Home Records; the Washington County, Grey Cloud Island Township Records; the Rainbow Club Records; the Study Club Records; and the William Watts Folwell and Family Papers.
