Play Conditions are a bit like Robinsyard. Robinsyard, you ask?
When my nephew Matthew was 4 years old, he carried a small rolled-up piece of paper tucked into a yarn belt that he liked to wear. I asked him what had he drawn on the paper and he replied, “Robinsyard.” I knew he had a friend name Robin, but I didn’t know what a Syard was. So, I asked, “What’s a Syard?” Matthew replied, “I don’t know but Robin has one.” After some mulling about what a Syard might be, I guessed that it was Robin’s Yard. The precise meaning is not so critical. What is important is that:

Event: Voices from Pejuhutazizi: Dakota Stories and Storytellers - A Reading and Q&A with the Authors
November 16 - St. Paul: 4:45 to 6:15 pm. Macalester Native and Indigenous (MNI) initiative - In honor of Native American Heritage Month, community members are invited to listen to and learn from Macalester alum Walter (“Super”) LaBatte '70 and his niece, Teresa Peterson, about Dakota history and culture in Minnesota. Through five generations at Pejuhutazizi (the place where they dig the yellow medicine, now also known as the Upper Sioux Indian Community in Minnesota), Teresa Peterson's family members have listened to and told stories: stories of events, migrations, and relationships in Dakota history, and stories that carry Dakota culture through tales, legends, and myths. Presentation: Re-enactor and an Impressionist Portrays General George Meade
November 17 - Northfield: 7 to 9 pm. Cannon Valley Civil War Roundtable - Gary Carlberg will portray Union General George Meade. General George Meade defeated Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia in the Battle of Gettysburg (1863) but he was widely criticized for allowing Lee's weakened force to escape into Virginia. Cost: No cost. Presentation: Remembrances of a Vietnam POW
November 17 - Bemidji: 12 pm. Beltrami County History Center - Veteran and former POW Gary Guggenberger will be sharing his story and taking questions about his experiences and the impacts of his service and internment. He was deployed to Southeast Asia in July of '68 as a truck driver with the 352nd Transportation Company. When a vehicle convoy he was in was ambushed, he was captured and taken as a Prisoner of War, spending 1,491 days in captivity. This program is occurring in conjunction with the exhibit, Veterans of Beltrami County. Cost: No cost. Learn more »

Presentation: Populism! Peril or Promise in U.S. Politics

Shelter & Solidarity - Public Historian and author Michael Lansing will take a deep dive into the history, myths, practices, and legacies of popular politics and “small-d” democracy in the United States. The populist tradition is a significant, controversial, and often misunderstood strain of U.S. history. Lansing is an associate professor of history at Augsburg University in Minneapolis. Exhibit: Owls in Outer Space
November 21 through January 1, 2023 - Winona: Winona County History Center - On exhibit are the contest winners of the International Owl Center coloring contest. The 2022 contest received 2,810 entries from 39 countries and 24 U.S. states. Owls in outer space is a theme from children all over the world, year after year. Field Salary Survey
We’ve teamed up with the Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums to conduct a salary survey of the local history community. Please complete the survey by November 16. There should only be one submission per organization and it will take about 15 minutes to complete.

From first-timers to seasoned pros, people from across the state are sharing their experience and knowledge at the Minnesota Alliance of Local History Museums' annual history conference. Sessions will take place on Wednesday, April 26 & Thursday, April 27, 2023.
Submit proposals by Wednesday, November 16 through the online form. All you need to know now is the basics of what you’d like to cover and any additional presenters you may include. Museum Store Sunday
November 27, 2022 is Museum Store Sunday! This is an annual shopping event supporting cultural institutions and their stores. This year, more than 1,800 museum stores representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia, 24 countries and five continents will celebrate Museum Store Sunday and offer unique gifts—with all purchases supporting their parent institution and the craftspeople and entrepreneurial businesses who provide many of the gifts found in museum stores. Nobles County Minnesota Historical Society celebrated the grand opening of the Nobles County Heritage Center in the historic Worthington Armory which just happened to be celebrating its 100-Year anniversary. The six-day event saw a series of programming and entertainment.
While the gala served as the final event in a week-long series of opening festivities, executive director Beth Rickers said there are still finishing touches to be done. The Historical Society continues to have a matching donation program in place, including the opportunity to buy a key for $200, which will go toward funding for exhibits, renovations, and more. Legacy of the Lakes Museum, Alexandria, MN, relies on its volunteers to help get them to get ready for closing down for the winter. They got all the boats moved and covered, brought in outdoor furniture, cleaned, and installed new hoists. The volunteers will be back May 19, 2023 when the museum reopens. Learn more »
