Replica Viking Ship, Hjemkomst Showing mast

Measuring the Hjemkomst Ship's Mast 2024
Every few years, the City of Moorhead calls in their engineers and surveyors to check the mast of the Hjemkomst Viking Ship to ensure it remains as close to 90 degrees as possible. If the ship’s tall mast leans one way or the other, it would put stress on the hull of the ship below and possibly keel over. I don’t know the last time this happened, but I recall writing a short article in our newsletter about it, so one could check if they wanted a date. In January of 2024, the City wanted to do it again. Continue Reading »

Annual Meeting: Lyon County Historical Society - The 1980s Farm Crisis in West Central Minnesota
April 11  @ 6:30 pm - Marshall: Lyon County Historical Society - Presenter Jim Roe said his work was not designed to identify the causes of the Farm Crisis of the 1980s, but to tell its stories. Its causes are easy to understand on an economic level. What happened during the 1980s played a major role in shaping today's agricultural landscape. When Roe asks his subjects what are the most visible changes, two answers are almost automatic. No animals are on the landscape; they are now raised in buildings. Not surprisingly, many point out how farm tractors and equipment are so much larger now than in the 1980s. Learn more »

Minnesota Main Streets State Conference April 3-5, 2024 Owatonna, MN

TIPS & TOOLS

Fire burning in brush near a dirt road. Photo by Hayes ScrivenFire at Split Rock Lighthouse
Out of an abundance of caution, the Split Rock Lighthouse historic site was evacuated Tuesday afternoon due to a nearby ground fire. All visitors and staff safely left the area. Thanks to the quick response by the Lake County Sheriff, the Silver Bay Fire Department, and the Minnesota DNR, the fire was put out within a few hours. There were no damages to historic buildings or structures, and Split Rock opened as usual the following day.

Drought conditions can increase the risk of wildfires spreading to buildings. In addition to landscape management and building maintenance, develop a fire safety plan for your museum that includes evacuation routes, designated meeting places, and procedures for using fire extinguishers. Stay informed, and monitor local fire danger ratings and weather conditions, especially during periods of drought. Be prepared to take additional precautions or evacuate if necessary. Remember, it's always best to consult with a fire safety professional for specific recommendations tailored to your building and location.
