On January 12, 2023, Heritage Preservation, Planning, and Outreach participated in a meeting of Minnesota local history organizations' executive directors held at the Washington County Heritage Center in Stillwater, MN. Over 20 leaders of local history organizations attended online and in person. The group discussed grant projects, succession planning, donor management systems, and more.
January 19 - Online: 2 to 3 pm (CT): Collections inventories are the fundamental method to understand what you have in your collection and to ensure you can easily find items. Inventories are necessary to have "intellectual control" over your museum collection so you may properly care for and use it. Heritage Partnership Program Grant Deadline
Heritage Partnership Program grants build the capacity of two or more eligible organizations to work together on their shared goals for Minnesota’s history. Knitting for Home
This is a series of blog posts relating to our current “Knitting with Love” exhibit.
Knitting is not just for clothing. Tea cozies, coasters, placemats, and pillows are common household knitted items.
The most common knitted household item is a blanket, such as cozy throw, an afghan, or a bedspread. We have several knitted bedspreads in the collection. They are large and heavy, so we decided to display only the pillow cover from one of the bedspreads. Continue Reading »

Program Seeks to Preserve Native Languages

January 23 - Online: 2 to 3 pm: Environment and Culture Partners, New Buildings Institute, and NEMA - The Carbon Inventory Project (CIP) is part of the IMLS National Leadership Grant research project Culture Over Carbon: Understanding Museums’ Energy Use. This Project will provide training and resources for cultural institutions to organize their energy data and calculate their institution’s carbon footprint associated with energy use October 2022 – June 2023. In Black Ink, a publishing arts initiative, was at the University of Minnesota Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center in North Minneapolis doing the first part of a two-part interview to get the migration stories of Nothando and Vusimusi Zulu, community elders who founded the Black Storytellers Alliance dedicated to presenting and training Black storytellers, including those from the younger generations. The Black Storytellers Alliance is now going into its 33rd year. Learn more »
Volunteers took time to pose to show off their design and sign-building handiwork at the White Bear town hall after completing the job. The historic town hall was designed by Cass Gilbert who went on to design bigger civic buildings such as the Minnesota State Capitol and the US Supreme Court Building. Learn more »
