On December 8, staff from MNHS' Heritage Preservation, Planning, & Outreach (HPPO) was in attendance as the Hmong Cultural Center celebrated its 30th anniversary at its new storefront museum located in the Little Mekong district just a few blocks from the Minnesota State Capitol. In recognition of the Center's 30th anniversary, Governor Walz proclaimed that day to be "Hmong Cultural Center Day in Minnesota."
Spotlighted Project: Mitchell Saloon Renovation & Stabilization
The 1876 Mitchell Saloon (now Ed's Museum), is the oldest contributing building in the Wykoff Commercial Historic District and the oldest remaining wood structure in the City of Wykoff. During the 1930s & 40s, it operated as a Jack Sprat Grocery store. As a museum, it houses a collection of Jack Sprat grocery items and a restored-to-1940s upstairs living quarters.

Remembering Jean-Nickolaus Tretter
Visionary collector established a unique and globe-spanning archive at the U of M Libraries
On Dec. 9, 2022 we lost a giant. Jean-Nickolaus Tretter, avid collector and founder of the Tretter Collection in GLBT Studies, a University of Minnesota archive of gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, nonbinary, and queer-gendered (LGBTQ+) materials.
At 76 years of age, Jean left an indelible mark on LGBTQ history thanks to his persistent collecting of LGBTQ history that began in the 1970s. Surrounded in an apartment full of books, periodicals, and ephemera relating to LGBTQ history worldwide, Jean Tretter built a collection that will have a ripple effect on our capacity to know queer and trans history long into the future.

Libraries Transform Communities Engagement Grant
February 1, 2022 - (Deadline): American Library Association - This is a grant to support innovative and meaningful community engagement efforts in libraries. The grant will provide $2,000 for a school, public, academic, tribal, or special library to expand its community engagement efforts. Enbridge building to become museum/cultural center for Natives
It’s just been the month when Native people are remembered. That’s nice. Now we want more, like we want to protect that Native heritage lifeway and tell our stories to all. We also want to create a new history, one which is healing, restorative, and makes a better society and better world.
Native people are not in the past, we are in the present and we are in the future. Here’s a story we are making, it’s in Park Rapids, Minnesota and we can make this story together. Giiwedinong, the new Treaty and Culture Museum, will open this upcoming spring in downtown Park Rapids in the former Carnegie Library.

Digitizing History with the Anoka County Historical Society - NorthMetroTV
One man at the Anoka County Historical Society has taken more than 10,000 pictures of items in the collection, making the items more accessible to more people.
Kids were out in force helping Minnesota's history museums with projects this holiday season. At Pipestone County Historical Society, the Pipestone Area Youth Fastpitch team helped move their bound newspaper collection upstairs to the second floor. While at Mille Lacs County Historical Society, three Princeton High School National Honor Society volunteers worked to “item alphabetize” each of the photo envelopes in the “A” box of Princeton photography studio photographs.
