Employees from the company that installed the fire suppression system in the collections storage area of the Afton Historical Museum, gave a full (and loud) demonstration to representatives from the Lower St. Croix fire department, the City of Afton, Afton Historical Society staff, and the staff from the MNHS Heritage Preservation, Planning, & Outreach (HPPO) department. As a Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant funded project staff were in Afton, MN, doing a site visit.

Heritage Partnership Program grants build the capacity of two or more eligible organizations to work together on their shared goals for Minnesota’s history. Winter approaching, Christmas thoughts were in the air. Christmas was always a special event. Mother, with all her handiwork, provided many surprises. Dad, being a carpenter at hand, did his part with the toys. Everything was homemade. Our Christmas Tree was the most beautiful. It was usually a large tree with white real candles. These were burned only once, while we sang Christmas carols. The ornaments were animal cookies. It took nine days to mature the dough and then it was rolled and cut out and frosted in white on both sides.

Exhibit - New Art Show Explores Area Buildings
January 6 through February 19 - Winona: Winona County History Center - The paintings and drawings of vernacular buildings by Paul Burmeister will be on display. Regional, vernacular building types have become a priority for the artist who was born and raised in Winona. His acrylic paintings are built up very slowly, from initial drawing to final adjustments, using many, mostly thin layers of transparent-to-translucent-to-opaque color. The artist will give a brief gallery talk on January 6, at 5 pm. Cost: Free. For more information call 507-454-2723.

Event - Dakota 38+2 Memorial Ride Concludes
December 26 - Mankato: Blue Earth County Library - This year will be the final 38 + 2 Memorial Ride. The 330-mile horseback ride from Lower Brule, SD to Mankato, MN started in 2005 to honor the 40 Dakota Warriors who were hanged in Mankato between 1862-64. The ride, which began December 10, will end with a ceremony at Reconciliation Park at 10 am and a documentary screening to follow at the Blue Earth County Library at 11 am. Cost: Free. Learn more »

December 26 through January 2 - St. Cloud: Stearns History Museum - Check your knowledge and learn a little about Central Minnesota history while exploring Heritage Park and Stearns History Museum grounds. Luverne is a small southwest Minnesota town of almost 5,000 people. But, now, as the result of an exhibit at the Rock County History Center, there are more nutcrackers than people in the town.
Thousands of nutcrackers line the shelves and cabinets at the museum. From miniatures to 8-foot statues, there are no duplicates on the shelves stretching around the rooms.
