Heritage Preservation Grants

Spotlighted Project: Teien Central School District No. 9 Schoolhouse Conditions Assessment
Teien Central Schoolhouse - Final Condition Report - 2024-12-16-1The Legacy grant program funded a Conditions Assessment of the Teien Central School District No. 9 schoolhouse, built in 1904, to evaluate its restoration needs. This assessment will help prioritize necessary stabilization and restoration projects, as the building has served the community for decades, first as a school and later as a town hall. In 2020, the Township Board, facing budget constraints, formed a volunteer committee to seek funding for the building's extensive restoration to prevent its destruction. Restoration of the building will allow it to once again be utilized as a place for public gatherings as well as serve as a museum display of the history of the school building and showcase its historical significance.
Recipient: Township of Teien
Funded Amount: $10,000

From the Blog

This week's blog post is from the Paynesville Historical Society. Have a blog? Let us know!

Carol Wegner's Old Farming Methods
Old Farming Methods, a series of interviews with people from the Paynesville area on their experiences and their ancestors' experiences with farming.
In Carol’s words:
My parents, Harvey & Elizabeth Krause, farmed on a farm on the East side of Corcoran in Hennepin County, west of the Twin Cities. It was a typical dairy farm. My dad also farmed my Aunt Eda's farm on the West side of Corcoran, about a mile from our place. My Uncle Henry died in 1930 and that’s when my dad started farming his land. Uncle Henry left a nice house and barn. My dad rented the farm and barn. He hired a man who lived with my aunt and grandma. They had cows in that barn too, so he had two barns full of cows. My dad had a hired man at each place. He probably farmed a little more land than most people did in those years. It was hard work. We did not get electricity until the summer of 1938. Continue Reading »

The White House has recently ordered the termination of thousands of federal grants supporting the history field, including those from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Park Service, creating a crisis for history organizations nationwide. This sudden loss of funding has led to canceled projects, reduced public programs, staff furloughs or layoffs, and even the threat of permanent closures for some organizations. In response, the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) is urging affected organizations to send copies of their grant cancellation letters to help assess legal options and strengthen advocacy efforts. Submitting these notices will aid AASLH in understanding the impact and potentially support strategies to defend these vital federal agencies. Learn more »

Five staff members standing under a sign Hennepin County Medical ExaminerMNHS Archival Digitization Team Update for March
The digitization team often works on large projects that can span several months. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner Reports/Coroner Record Books are a collection of 48 boxes of large bound volumes of records dating from October 1906-1989. The team had previously digitized and published the first 25 volumes, spanning years 1906-1934. This month we published an additional 32 volumes, taking us up through 1958, and will continue this work until the entire collection has been digitized. You can view the records by visiting the link below.

As part of this project, our team was able to tour the HCME facility. Several of the volumes are currently on loan to them for a display, which we were able to view. We were also given a guided tour of the facility, including a brief explanation of what work is done in each area, and how their spaces are set up to respond to various events. Did you know that HCME employs the only forensic anthropologist in Minnesota? Read more »
