First Thursday Films at The Capri: "Putney Swope" Screening

7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

2027 W Broadway Ave, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 55411

About This Event

The Capri Theater's premiere Northside movie series continues with another slate of films worthy of your attention and time! Programmed in partnership with the MSP Film Society and the Minnesota Historical Society, First Thursday Films at the Capri aims to create a space for dialogue and better understanding. Come for the movies. Stay for the conversation.

An unforgettable masterpiece of late-’60s counterculture, Robert Downey Sr.’s Putney Swope remains a vital provocation on race, pop culture and America.

Putney Swope, the only African-American exec at his firm, is unexpectedly elected its president and turns the industry on its ear through a series of outrageous, taboo-busting TV commercials (strewn throughout the film like comedic landmines.) As Swope becomes the Generalissimo of Madison Avenue, Downey takes no prisoners and skewers the entire political spectrum. Essential viewing.

Putney Swope was restored by the Academy Film Archive and The Film Foundation, with funding provided by the Hobson/Lucas Family Foundation.

Tickets are $5/free for Northsiders (zip codes 55411, 55412, 55430) and are available soon at mspfilm.org or at the door. Free parking is available.
