Please join us to celebrate David Hakensen’s new book Her Place in the Woods: The Life of Helen Hoover.

Enjoy a conversation between Minnesota historian and author Annette Atkins and former MNHS Executive Council President David Hakensen. They will discuss his new book about one of Minnesota’s most beloved nature writers, Helen Hoover. Learn more about Helen and her deliberate move from a corporate career in the city to living off-grid in a rustic cabin on Gunflint Lake. A book signing with the author will follow.

Annette Atkins is a professor emerita at Saint John's University and the College of Saint Benedict in Collegeville, MN. A scholar, teacher, and public historian, she specializes in transforming serious research into compelling stories, especially evident in Creating Minnesota: A History from the Inside Out. Annette is both an Emeritus and Honorary Council Member of the Minnesota Historical Society and was the Creating Our Future campaign co-chair.

David Hakensen is a corporate communications consultant and has served on several nonprofit boards. He was president of the executive council of the Minnesota Historical Society from 2018-2023.
