About This Event

Join us for a conversation reflecting on 200 years of organized Norwegian migration to North America with Terje Mikael Hasle Joranger, director of the Norwegian Emigrant Museum in Ottestad, Norway, and Annette Atkins, professor emerita at Saint John's University and the College of Saint Benedict.

On July 4, 1825, a group of 52 Norwegians set sail from Stavanger on the ship Restauration to make the first organized migration from Norway to North America. Since that first voyage, about 900,000 people have followed. While many returned to Norway, most stayed and built a new home in North America. Today nearly five million people in North America claim Norwegian ancestry, with Minnesota having more people with Norwegian ancestry than any other state.

Learn about the impact of Norwegian migration on our state, the complexities of immigrant experiences, and the lasting legacy of this transatlantic connection.

If you're unable to attend, the event is also accessible virtually via Zoom. Click here to register for virtual option.
