About This Event
Photography & Art at the Rock is a monthly exhibit at Split Rock Lighthouse showcasing local artists and photographers whose work celebrates the natural beauty of Minnesota’s North Shore and beyond.
For the month of September, we are proud to feature Mark Ellis, a North Shore-based photographer whose lifelong connection to nature is vividly reflected in his imagery. Mark began photographing wildlife and landscapes at age 12 with a 35mm film camera, inspired by the forests and wildlife near his family's northern Minnesota cabin. Now, more than 50 years later—and following a 33-year career as a research scientist at 3M—Mark continues to explore the Minnesota wilderness, capturing its stillness, motion, and wonder through both photography and time-lapse video.
Artist Bio:
Mark’s work centers on themes of conservation and education. His time-lapse footage has been featured by the BBC Natural History Unit, Nat Geo WILD, Minnesota Public Television, and the University of Minnesota’s Bell Museum. He also contributes to environmental causes, with proceeds from his popular loon calendar supporting the National Loon Center in Crosslake, MN. His video work is included in Medicine of the Wolf, an award-winning documentary on wolf conservation.
Ellis's show will run from September 1-30. He will be onsite to share more about his creative process and photographic journey on:
